Preparing to install
Disable any virus protection software before installing QuarkXPress for Macintosh or QuarkXPress for Power Macintosh. If you are concerned about a virus infecting your computer, we recommend that you first check the program diskettes and, if applicable, the CD. Then disable your virus detection before installing QuarkXPress.
To avoid potential problems with the installation process, temporarily disable unnecessary system extensions (especially non-Apple extensions) and control panels. (Note: Necessary control panels include Memory, Monitors, Mouse, Keyboard, Sound, and Startup Disk.) To disable control panels and system extensions, do one of the following:
• System 6.x, 680x0 Macintosh: Move any unnecessary system extensions and control panels out of your System Folder and choose Restart from the Special menu.
• System 7.x, 680x0 Macintosh and Power Macintosh: Use an extensions manager to disable unnecessary system extensions and control panels. You can also move any unnecessary system extensions and control panels out of your System Folder and choose Restart from the Special menu.
Note: When you install QuarkXPress from CD, your Macintosh or Power Macintosh requires a system extension or control panel to enable the CD–ROM drive to recognize the CD–ROM disc. Don’t disable this system extension or control panel.
Known incompatibility with System 7.5: The Apple Menu Options control panel can interfere with the installation process. To prevent the system from requesting installation diskettes at inappropriate times, disable the Apple Menu Options control panel and move it to the Desktop or into a disabled control panels folder in your Control Panels folder.
Installing the QuarkXPress Demo Application (CD-ROM)
Disable all virus protection software before installing the QuarkXPress for Macintosh Demo.
To use the demonstration software, insert the CD–ROM in the CD–ROM drive and complete the following seven steps:
1. Open either the Power Macintosh Demo or Macintosh Demo folder and select the folder for the language you want to use.
2. Drag the folder to the computer hard drive.
3. Open the Drag Contents to System Folder folder on the CD; open the folder for the language you want to use; then open either the Macintosh (68K) or Power Macintosh folder.
4. Open your System folder. Drag the Type Libraries folder onto the Extensions folder icon in your System folder.
5. Close your System folder. Drag QuickTime™ and the other remaining files onto your System Folder icon. Important: If you already have a copy of any of these files installed, an alert will display, asking if you want to replace the existing copy of the file. If the installed version of any file is newer than the version on this CD, do not replace the installed version with the version from this CD.
6. If you are using a PowerPC processor-based Mac OS computer, verify that the AppleScriptLib file is either in the Extensions folder in your System folder or in the same folder as the demonstration version of QuarkXPress. (An AppleScriptLib file is included in each Power Macintosh version QuarkXPress Demo folder — drag it to the Extensions folder in your System folder if you don’t already have a copy there.)
7. After installing, enable any disabled virus protection software and return your system to its normal configuration. Restart your computer.
8. Open the folder on the computer’s hard drive containing the demonstration software and double-click the QuarkXPress application icon. QuarkImmedia™ will be loaded when you launch QuarkXPress.
IMPORTANT: The QuarkXPress Demo will not run directly from the CD. You must install it on a hard disk. Each QuarkXPress Demo application is a complete working copy with the following limitations: the Save, Save As, Save Page as EPS, New -> Library, and Collect for Output commands are disabled; printouts are limited to a maximum of five pages; you can print only to a PostScript printer; and all output will contain the words, “QuarkXPress Demo.”

Release notes
QuarkXPress 3.32 new features
Updated word processing filters
QuarkXPress 3.32 includes new versions of the MacWrite Pro Import filter, the MS-Word Filter, and the WordPerfect Filter.
MacWrite Pro Import Filter
The MacWrite Pro Import Filter lets you import text into QuarkXPress 3.32 for Macintosh from MacWrite Pro 1.0–1.5.
• Some MacWrite Pro features are partially modified when imported into QuarkXPress documents. For example, the double-underline typestyle is replaced with single-underline, the lowercase type style is replaced with lowercase letters, and footnotes are collected and sequentially numbered at the end of the text chain with the original footnote numbers (or marker text) in parentheses.
• The following MacWrite Pro features are not supported by the MacWrite Pro Import Filter: graphics, headers, header breaks, columns, column breaks, endnotes, notes, footers, sections, text frames, page breaks, tables of contents, sorted paragraphs, movies, character-based style sheets, tables, and borders. In addition, variable features, such as date and time are not imported into QuarkXPress documents. QuarkXPress 3.32 users can still import MacWrite Pro documents that include these features; the options will not be included in the QuarkXPress document.
Microsoft Word Filter
The MS-Word Filter lets you import files into QuarkXPress 3.32 from Microsoft Word 3.x–6.0 for Mac OS and Microsoft Word 2.x–7.0 for Windows. The MS-Word Filter also lets you export text from QuarkXPress 3.32 for Macintosh to Microsoft Word 3.x–5.x for Mac OS and Microsoft Word 2.x for Windows.
The Microsoft Word filter requires specific OLE 2 files and Extensions to be present in your System Folder. We have included on the CD the latest OLE 2 files available at the time the QuarkImmedia Demo CD was mastered. Without these system extensions and files, the Microsoft Word filter will not load into QuarkXPress.
To make sure these files are properly installed for the 680x0-based Mac-OS compatible computer, verify the following:
• Microsoft OLE Extension — Should be installed in the Extensions folder in the System Folder.
• Standard OLE Types — File should be installed in the Type Libraries folder in the Extensions folder in the System Folder. If there is no Type Libraries folder, the folder must be created in the Extensions folder in the System Folder.
To make sure these files are properly installed for the PowerPC-based Mac-OS compatible computer, verify the following:
• Microsoft OLE Extension — Should be installed in the Extensions folder in the System Folder.
• Microsoft OLE Library — Should be installed in the Extensions folder in the System Folder.
• Microsoft OLE Automation — Should be installed in the Extensions folder in the System Folder.
• Standard OLE Types (Power Macintosh) — File should be installed in the Type Libraries folder in the Extensions folder in the System Folder. If there is no Type Libraries folder, the folder must be created in the Extensions folder in the System Folder.
Note: This MS-Word Filter recognizes most of the common formatting functions in Microsoft Word documents. However, the following Microsoft Word formats are not supported: bullets created with Bullets/Formatting, embedded objects, tables, complex (fast-saved) files. When text is imported into QuarkXPress, only applied style sheets are imported. Also, text with the “Normal” style sheet applied (or another style sheet based on “Normal”) is replaced with the QuarkXPress Normal style sheet (you will not be notified). Several features available in QuarkXPress but not available in Microsoft Word will not be exported.
WordPerfect Filter
The WordPerfect Filter lets you import text into QuarkXPress 3.32 from WordPerfect 3.0 and 3.1 for Mac OS and WordPerfect 6.x for Windows. The Filter also lets you export files from QuarkXPress 3.32 to WordPerfect 6.x for Windows. (WordPerfect 3.1 for Mac OS can read WordPerfect 6.0 for Windows documents, so there is no specific WordPerfect 3.1 for Mac OS export option in this release.)
Note: For the QuarkXPress for Macintosh/Power Macintosh filter to import WordPerfect documents from Microsoft Windows, the documents must first be converted to a form the filter will recognize. The application “PC->Mac WP convert” does this conversion. Drag-and-drop Windows WordPerfect documents onto the PC->Mac WP Convert icon, and they will be converted to the correct form. The QuarkXPress WordPerfect filter will then be able to import them. To download the “PC->Mac WP convert” application, access Quark’s online site: ftp.quark.com.
The WordPerfect filter recognizes most of the common formatting functions in WordPerfect documents. However, several features available in WordPerfect that are not available in QuarkXPress will not be imported, including tables, columns, double underlines, watermarks, headers/footers, overlays, borders, equations, movies, line numbers, and page numbers. In addition, some WordPerfect features (embedded graphics, additional text boxes, page and column breaks, and so forth) are not currently supported by the filter. The WordPerfect Filter will not enable QuarkXPress to open a file with WordPerfect password protection. Several features available in QuarkXPress but not available in WordPerfect will not be exported.
Collect for Output report
To generate a Collect for Output report without collecting any files, hold down the Option key while choosing Collect for Output from the File menu.
Windows 95 support
QuarkXPress 3.32 for Windows will work under Windows 95. QuarkXPress for Macintosh and QuarkXPress for Power Macintosh users who share QuarkXPress documents with QuarkXPress for Windows users running Windows 95 will no longer be restricted to DOS naming conventions.
